Keep your registration current
Your registration does not renew automatically. Renew it every year to keep practising as an attorney. If you miss the deadline, your name will be removed from the register and your registration will lapse.
Key dates
- Last week of May – The Secretariat will email you a renewal reminder.
- 1 June – No reminder yet? Contact us to check your details are up to date.
- 1 July – Your renewal is due. Pay your fee and submit your continuing professional education (CPE) declaration through IP Australia's Online Services.
- 31 July – The Designated Manager will remove you from the register if you have not renewed.
Patent and trade marks attorneys
To maintain your registration as an attorney, you need to pay an annual registration fee and provide proof that you have completed your CPE requirements.
Steps to renew

1. Complete your CPE
In the 12 months before you renew, complete the required hours of CPE.

2. Receive your renewal reminder
The Secretariat will email you a renewal reminder in the last week of May. If you have not received it by 1 June, contact us to check your details are up to date.

3. Submit your renewal
Renewal of your registration is due on 1 July each year, regardless of your initial registration date. Submit your renewal through IP Australia's Online Services.

4. Receive your confirmation
You will receive a confirmation receipt of your payment through your Online Services account. The Secretariat will email you before 31 July to confirm your registration has been renewed.

Annual renewal fees
Your annual fees for renewal depend on the type of registration that you have:
- patent or trade marks attorney: $450
- dual patent and trade marks attorney: $650.
Incorporated attorneys
If you are an incorporated patent or trade marks attorney, pay your renewal fee on 1 July each year to remain registered.
Steps to renew

1. Receive your notice
A notice with instructions for making payment will be sent to the listed attorney director(s) by 1 June. Make sure contact details for the director(s) are up to date – contact us if they need updating.

2. Pay your renewal fee
Follow the instructions in your notice and pay your renewal fee on 1 July.

3. Maintain your insurance
You must also maintain adequate professional indemnity insurance (PII) to remain registered. We keep your certificate of insurance on record and send reminders throughout the year to update your details. You do not need to send another copy of your certificate of insurance with your renewal.

4. Receive your confirmation
You will receive a confirmation receipt of your payment through your Online Services account. The Secretariat will email you before 31 July to confirm your registration renewal.
